I'm learning to crochet.

I have wanted to learn to crochet for a while now.  It's something crafty I can do, create things for my little ones, and it's quiet and something I can take along with me anywhere, unlike my sewing machine ;)

My very first project was a teeny tiny little hat for my friend Michelle's new little girl Sophia.  It's not very stretchy because I was winging it and used only the single crochet stitch, but it's not too shabby, if I say so myself :).  I put it on a Pepsi can so you could see how little it is:

I used Lion Brand homespun yarn.  It's so soft, I love the color variances and the texture.  While it makes it a little harder to keep track of stitches because of the texture, it also works to cover your mistakes :)

My next project is a wool soaker to go over cloth diapers.  I'm using this pattern, and my yarn looks like this:
Gorgeous gray and white

Wool soakers are a great option because they're natural and breathable (unlike PUL), it's anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, you hardly ever need to wash it (unless poo gets on it), it can hold a ton of liquid without feeling wet, and there are SO many cute options!  There are a few types; there are soakers, which is just the diaper cover portion and goes only over the bottom.  You can also get shorties, which are little wool shorts, or longies which are wool pants.  They also make skirties, which are little shorts or soakers with an adorable skirt added on.  You can get (or make) a soaker that is knit or crocheted out of wool yarn, or you can find some that are sewn out of wool fabric.  A cheap, easy option is to find wool sweaters at the thrift store and cut them up to repurpose into soakers.

I'm really excited about my foray into crocheting and into wool covers for our diapers.  I'll show pictures when I finish the soaker, hopefully it's not too terrible!!

  1. Hehe. The poo part is what scares me off of wool soakers.

Your first project looks very nice. Crocheting is on my to do list, when I find the time. I look forward to more inspiration from this page.

  2. Now that C is older and we don't really have poop-splosions like when he was a newborn and exclusively breast fed, I'm not too worried about it. But honestly, I deal with it so much anyways I'm not sure that it would phase me, except that wool has to be hand washed. Maybe I'll leave that scrubbing up to hubby :P
