All natural nighttime face moisturizer.

Just a little tidbit about me: I have difficult skin.  It's super dry and super sensitive along with having eczema, and has been my entire life.  I can only use certain soap, lotion, laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc.  I can't wear earrings because no matter the metal content, my ears get red, itchy, and irritated.  If we stay in a hotel I have to bring my own pillow because I'll get a rash on my face if I sleep on hotel linens.  I've learned what products I can and can't use, and have managed to keep it under control for the most part.

Then, I got pregnant.  My body is drier than ever and flaky, and my face is oily with a nice case of acne thrown in that brings me back to middle school.  I've been at a complete loss as to what to do for my face.  I don't feel comfortable using the strong cleansers while I'm pregnant because of the chemical content, and at this point all they do is make my face even redder and more inflamed because they're just too harsh for my skin.  So I looked around at what I had on hand, and came up with something that works surprisingly well for how simple it is!
I keep a jar of coconut oil in my bathroom to remove eye makeup and to slather on my growing belly when I get out of the shower.  It smells amazing, is super gentle on my skin, and works!  It's not too heavy or greasy; it takes a little while to soak in all the way, but when it does I don't feel gross, I just feel like I have happy, perfectly-moisturized skin.   I also have a tiny bottle of tea tree oil that I use in the diaper wash when we're battling a yeast rash.  I noticed while I was at the store buying it that Burt's Bees makes a blemish stick for acne containing TTO, and I thought, hmmmmm.

So, here's my very non-scientific but amazingly effective recipe for a gentle, all natural, acne moisturizer for nighttime.  (Because the coconut oil takes a while to really soak in to your skin, it's not really ideal for daytime.  I don't mind walking around my house at night with a shiny, oiled-up face.)
  • 1/2  to 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 2-4 drops tea tree oil

That's it!!  I have a little toddler spoon that I keep in my bathroom and use it to scoop out the coconut oil, then I add the tea tree oil on top of it and mix it around with my finger or a q-tip.  Then I just apply the mixture onto my face, neck, and decollatage (after cleansing, of course) and I'm good to go.  The tea tree oil is very strong, so use less if you have sensitive skin, and be prepared for a strong smell.  It's not necessarily a bad smell, but it's pretty... spicy? I guess is the right word.

I was really surprised at how well this worked for me.  When I went to bed my face was red, there were pimples and inflammation all over, and I had a lot of redness on my chest as well.  In the morning, my skin was a normal color and there were MUCH fewer bumps and pimples.  I can notice a difference throughout the day if I didn't use this the night before, so it's going to be added into my daily skincare routine.  Now I just need to find a cute little jar to make a bigger batch in so I don't have to mix it every night, lol.

  1. That's interesting! I've used tea tree oil for my dogs itching/gnawing issues and never thought of anything else to use it for... I am going to try this!
